an office

- life - office
For a while now, as I try to fall asleep at night, I often find myself building the perfect office in my head. I'm not quite sure why I have this unquenchable desire for a super decked out office, but I do. As time would have it, I find myself at an interesting spot right now in life, specifically speaking in regards to my options of creating an office. An event as significant as it is tragic has recently happened in my life, and as I try to put the pieces back together, I think I can fit a super decked out office somewhere in this puzzle called life. The event I speak of is obviously the departure of my very good friend and comrade Bard. Our joint venture of the ownership of the three family house I call home is quickly coming to an end. The exceptionally smart and athletic Bard decided to pursue a life of slow talkin, slow walkin, slow thinkin, and slow drinkin southern sweaty style, holla. The day to day Bardisms I have enjoyed over the past while will obviously be greatly missed, and as sad as his departure is, I am happy with the confidence that I find in us remaining good friends forever. All of these changes have spurred big changes to occur on the homefront, as we prepare to close on my buy-out of the house. These changes have have helped to give me the option of creating a super decked out office. I say only helped, because if it wasn't for the past months of hard work and studying I have done on some of the various technology topics, I would feel very guilty spending the type of money this office is going to require.
I have a loose 3-4 week time line of how I imagine everything panning out. This past Saturday, I picked out the desks that I am going to use, I choose a nice natural cherry /graphite gray style from the Bush Westfield line of office furniture. The two desks will for an "L" in one of the rectangle offices corners. Each end will extend approximately 6 feet. The same day, I purchased a much over-due multi-function printer. I have done a good amount of research on multi-function printers, and the HP C6180 was a very close fit to my ideal printer. It has built in wireless which I appreciate more now than I expected, it's great just plugging it into the wall anywhere and being able to start printing from anywhere. It has a separate 4x6 photo tray and exceptional print quality. It also has a 50 sheet feeder for scanning and copying, a necessity for my plan to lead a "paperless" life. It has a nice LCD screen on it, a bunch of flashy button, and unfortunately a fax machine that requires something called a "phone line"????. So that's how far the ball has started rolling thus far on the super decked out office. It would start rolling incredibly fast if I wasn't worried about a decently sized Apple announcement for February. I am anticipating a super bowl commercial announcement involving the Beatles, as well as another announcement (hopefully involving Leopard) around February 20th. These are just guesses, but if by any chance Leopard does come out soon, i want the new machine to have it already on it. Depending on what kind of unexpected hardware announcements get made in February, I am strongly leaning towards getting a juiced up iMac 24'. If I upgrade the memory and video, I have faith in it's ability to rock any resource intensive projects I will be working on. We will see what happens, the idea of an unannounced 8-core Pro workstation is as scary as it is enticing. I already have a cart at the Apple store filled with every accessory who's purchase I could justify to myself for buying. Luckily I talked my self into getting some crazy stuff, so I'm very excited. Additionally, the office will contain a top notch 7.1 audio system, a comfy couch, cool lighting, weird/dorky posters, and possibly a rug, ionic vaporizer, and space heater. I will call this Office 1.0, as it is a very early rendering of the ultimate office I will build for myself in just a few minutes as I try to get to bed at a decent time, as I have to catch the 6:55 train to Penn Station, which will begin, what I hope turn out to be a short day of work at Civil Queens. Good night from the inside.
