all is not LOST

- After Effects - Lost
I have been struggling with a huge issue the past few days. Much to my relief and surprise it was suddenly resolved just a little while ago! For an unknown reason, a video project I've spent many many hours on would not open in After Effects. I was getting an absolutely horrible error message. For the record, it was:
After Effects error: not enough memory to initialize AGM ( 83 :: 8 )
I searched existing threads in several forums for help but could find very little. I started a thread in the
Adobe Forums and was lucky enough to have one user with seemingly very solid knowledge on CS3 offer some tips. At that point, I was just super happy to describe the problem to someone who could potentially help. Before trying the users suggestion I updated some software and tried to open the project one more time...and here we are, super happy and relieved. The project contains an absolutely critical part of Discomentary Volume 1, having to redo it would have sucked...yet, it would have been nice I guess to fix a few fundamental things I wish I had done differently.
Here is a screen shot from when my nice little project opened up:
how exciting!
Almost equally as exciting was tonights episode of LOST, it was one of my favorite ones out of all 4 seasons. I really liked it when Sawyer called Ben, Gizmo. Ha. How about Hurley tricking Sayid into thinking he was left behind by the new Others, Lock's stupid posse? I wouldn't mind it one bit if Hurley found himself with Charlie...I guess we def know that won't be happening. How about Sayid working for Ben? That one will keep you thinking for a long time.
There is more about more but not now, good night.

- LOST - After Effects - Internet Traffic
-The Super Bowl was great, I'm really happy the Giants won, who would have thought? Take that Boston.
-I was just checking out some LOST related sites, there is a whole chain of "official" sites such as
flyoceanicair.com and
find815.com. The latter has some interesting clips that I will look to watch more of at some point. The first clip got me thinking, are any of the LOST people stranded on the island married to someone not on the plane, or at least away from a significant other parter kind of person? I can't think of anyone who has talked about missing a husband/wife bf/gf. Can you???
-My computer has been rendering a 1 minute 26 second clip for 7 hours and 7 minutes with 1 hour and 53 minutes remaining. I used my first expressions today in After Effects, they are pretty cool/powerful. The clip rendering will be my first chance to see how it all turned out. Worthy to note, I was previously getting a horrible error message. After combing the forums for a while, I learned the problem was caused by Apples recently released Quicktime 7.4 upgrade. I had to use a program called
Pacifist to revert back to QT 7.3 before I could start this rendering, it seems to be working fine now.
-Forums are so amazing, I think the answer to almost ever question in the world can be found in a forum. Last week , I had a super specific tax question that I posted on the TurboTax community support forum; within 2 hours I had a great answer by one of their "Tax Pro" staff members. Here is a question I would like answered: What is the deal with all of these under water internet cables breaking? Why isn't anyone freaking out about this? Maybe the
Fire sales from "Live Free or Die Hard" are still too fresh in my head, but the number of internet issues within the past few days seems to be a little suspicious at the least.
-OK, good night.
There is more, but I just need to sleep

- Bermuda - Explorer of the Seas - After Effects - AJAX - Apple
The cruise was great. Overall, it was very relaxing, a quality many vacations often lack. The boat was huge and the amenities were plentiful. The ship,
Explorer of the Seas, is new; with it's maiden voyage being in 2000. When I noticed all of the things in my room bearing the ships name, I initially thought that Royal Caribbean was simply acknowledging the fact that I myself was an explorer who happened to be at sea. When I later realized that no such acknowledgment had in fact taken place and that every room likely bared such items, I was not disappointed. I have posted some photos from the trip, the majority are ones I took, with there being some that my Mom took on her camera. Worthy to note, I really like being able to get someone else's entire "digital roll" of film from a trip I was also on. Not only was it nice having some of the very good shots my Mom took, but it is cool seeing the entire trip you were on through another persons eyes.
Here is a picture of our assistant waitress cutting my food for me. It's funny on its face, but even funnier because historically, cutting my food is my least favorite part about eating. Her name is Oana, pronounced as
wanna:
Here is a picture of me in my new favorite hat:
The extended weekend I faced after returning to the inside Friday was nothing like the relaxing atmosphere I had just departed. I received phone calls from two different college friends during the cruise, each stating they were looking to visit during the weekend. My one friend and I went out pretty hard Friday night and had a great time. The next two days my other buddy and I really took advantage of the great weather as we hit up
Grafton Lake State Park to walk some of the trails and then took a long bike tour around the city and then along the Hudson. We bought enough awesome food to grill that we were actually still able to make it out for a few hours each night. It was a really great weekend.

[The rest of this post will likely be considered more boring than what you have just read, proceed with caution, if at all]
After being pretty lazy for the most part of the day, I finished a sequence for the New Orleans video slide show. This project is really just turning into a big sandbox, where I am trying out a ton of different ideas really quickly, that I would later slow down and use in future projects. Due to this, I will not spend an incredibly long amount of time polishing up some scenes that I see minor problems with when I watch it. I bought an After Effects book prior to the trip, it has proven to be a good investment, it has a lot of screen shots so it was actually useful even without the computer in front of me.
I got an urge to jump back into AJAX today, fear not, I resisted. I have some housecleaning I would like to do on this site, as well as some long overdue implementation of basic site functionality (looking up a forgotten password, blog comments in blog page, the list goes on forever...). I am fairly confident an AJAX approach will really get me the results I am looking for. And then there is the new picture page I have had on the back burner for a month or two...I am not too far from finishing it, but really need to figure out the best way to load a decent number of pictures in a reasonable amount of time, while also maintaining a snappy user interface. I might dabble a little bit more with AJAX in the near future, my last efforts bared me a fully functioning AJAX "set up" of pages but it was all proof of concept, as I quickly learned I was pursuing the wrong approach to what I was working on (Photo Album Bar on main page). With the kind of things I am now looking to work on, an AJAX approach is definitely appropriate, as everything will require the interaction of the server side database. With all that said there is a good chance that I will avoid any coding distractions as I continue my push on
Discomentary Volume 1.
Well, I am tired.
Final thoughts you ask...?
-2 days until September 5th, I am very interested to see what Apple will release, with almost all speculation pointing at significantly improved iPods.
-I am VERY MAD at NBC. I blame them for the breakdown of talks regarding their content being on iTunes. I already bought a few Office seasons as well as all of Heros season 1, and now I can't continue my collection in the same format as what I already have. UGGGG to them.
[end of "more boring" stuff]
There is more, but I just need to sleep...from me, to you, inside to out, good night.

- After Effects - John from Cincinnati - Transformers - About me
Nothing too exciting to report today. I just finished up what I believe to be the last bit of computer work to be done this weekend. I have a stack of mail I've been neglecting to open, so maybe I'll work on that exciting mission.
I was able to stay on course with my original weekend plans of "taking it easy". My body is a few steps closer to being prepared for the fast approaching weekend in New Orleans, 5 days away.
I put a good handful of hours into working with some video projects and an even bigger handful of hours doing some tidying up on the web site. I primarily focussed the majority of web work on making the site display properly in Internet Explorer, I am happy to report that my efforts did not go unrewarded, as the right hand column, as well as user comments, now display closer to how I have intended them to.
I'm almost done uploading all of my digital camcorder tape from back in the day to the computer. Some of this video is really funny, it is unfortunate a decent amount of it can never be reproduced :-( Once this is complete, I will be able to start labeling clips and laying out a timeline for
Discomentary, Volume 1. I'm pretty interested to see how this video turns out. I am aiming for about an hour long DVD that will contain photos and pictures, mixed together with cool visual/audio effects. I believe this project will take 3-4 months. I believe I will need to buy a greenscreen, for some
bluescreen editing/effects. I have a head full of ideas that I am excited to try out.
The weather this weekend turned out a lot better than first predicted. This made me make a slight alteration to my original plan, as I added some outdoor activity involving soccer and bike riding to today and yesterday.
I saw the movie Transformers last night with a friend. It was good. I am happy I saw it in the theater.
I am excited for tonights episode of John From Cincinnati. I believe the preview painted the picture that something was going to happen to Shaun, I hope not, because he is cool. Not as cool as John, but still cool.
This is such a boring post, I don't know why I will even bother clicking submit, but I will, because I know even a boring glimpse of the inside, for you, is better than no glimpse at all. It is too bad you can't listen to the video footage as it is being imported in the background. The current tape is New Years 2003. It is pretty outrageous.
I leave you not only with the desire of wanting more, but with a screen shot of an After Effects project I was experimenting with Friday night.
Oh, and Splash 8.36 is the current "live" page. Besides improvements for IE, it also includes the start of a "footer" to the page. An "About Me" section if you will. As if I could ever sum myself up with words! Fear not, I will put much thought into what I will write.
